Turkic ID: Travel Between Five Countries Using National ID Cards

In the future, citizens of Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan may be able to cross each other's borders using national ID cards instead of international passports.

The information was announced on September 14, 2026, by Kubanichbek Omuraliev, Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS).

According to Omuraliev, preparatory work on the project is already underway. The issue is being considered within the OTS as a joint initiative involving the five countries. No exact launch date has been announced yet.

How Does the System Work Now?

The possibility of crossing the border using a national ID card is already available between Azerbaijan and Türkiye.

ID cards are also used for mutual travel between:

• Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan;
• Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

The planned system is called “Turkic ID”. The project is being considered as part of the digital integration of the Turkic world, alongside the development of common tourist cards and further simplification of visa procedures.

Passport-Free Travel for Citizens of Kazakhstan

For citizens of Kazakhstan, travel using an identity card is already permitted under certain bilateral agreements. An ID card is sufficient for entry into Russia and Kyrgyzstan.

Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are also discussing the possibility of simplifying border crossings using national ID cards.

At the same time, a passport is currently required for travel between Kazakhstan and Armenia, despite a previous agreement allowing visa-free stays of up to 90 days.

What Could Change?

If the Turkic ID project is fully implemented, border crossings between the five countries could become easier without the need for an international passport.

At present, no official launch date for the unified system has been announced.
