FOREIGN-PLATED CARS IN TURKEY: COULD THE TIME LIMIT BE EXTENDED?

Turkey is considering possible changes to the rules governing the temporary importation of vehicles with foreign license plates. The proposed change could allow vehicle owners to keep their cars in the country longer than the current 730-day limit, provided that an additional tax is paid.

What are the current rules?

Under the current regulations, the maximum period for temporarily keeping a foreign-plated vehicle in Turkey is 730 days (2 years).

What is being proposed?

According to Ekonomim, extending this period in exchange for an additional tax is being considered. This could be particularly relevant for foreigners who live in Turkey for extended periods and use their own vehicles.

Important: This is currently only a proposal. The law has not yet been adopted, and the amount of the additional tax and the conditions for extending the period have not been determined.

It is also not yet known whether a possible new mechanism would apply to foreigners holding a residence permit in Turkey.
